Coronado High School, named for the great Spanish adventurer and explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, opened its doors as the third Lubbock High School in 1965. Home to the Mustangs, the wild and spirited forces of the west which are the school's mascot. Coronado boasts scarlet and gold as its school colors and the symbol of its many victories in the words of the school's Alma Mater sung with pride by its 1635 students.

Coronado, which is now in the 43nd year of serving students, features a rigorous college-preparatory academic program that yields the largest percentage of high school graduates among the district schools going on to higher education each year. Coronado has 20+ advanced placement courses and a dual credit enrollment program for high school students to receive college credit in conjunction with South Plains College. Coronado, a member of the prestigious College Board, and its students consistently lead the district with the highest TAKS scores.

The Mustang student body has developed a community spirit since its inception. Each year the National Honor Society organizes and conducts the largest single blood drive in the region. The students raise contributions for the United Way, South Plains Food Bank, and March of Dimes Walk America.
